I was interested to learn recently that my beloved In-N-Out Burger prints references to bible verses on their paper utensils. Apparently, the practice began in the 1980s during Rich Snyder’s presidency, a reflection of the beliefs held by the Snyder family, owner of this fine chain of hamburger joints. Though not quite as in-your-face as what Alaska Airlines does – they place a bible scripture card on every meal tray – I still find In-N-Out’s more subtle tactic of proselytizing moderately annoying. I do give them credit for being so discreet about it. After all, you do have to search a bit to find the markings, and they only provide you with the book, chapter and verse, meaning anyone really interested in the topic has to do a fair amount of heavy lifting on their own, suggesting they may be predisposed to this nonsense anyhow. But still, how can a family that makes such a mean double-double still believe in fairy tales?
